Huda Beauty Faux filter Luminous Matte Foundation

Law and behold, a new foundation has joined the Huda Beauty family: the Faux Filter Luminous matte foundation.

I’ve watched countless video reviews on this foundation and I am really disappointed by the majority online influencer community for not disclosing all the details about this foundation.

Don’t sweat! I have you covered with all the good, bad and the improvement areas. I haven’t not used photoshop nor photo filters, so if you want to see how the new Huda Beauty foundation looks on real skin, you have come to the right place.

The Huda Beauty foundation line now includes the:

  • Faux filter liquid foundation
  • Faux Filter foundation stick
  • Faux Filter luminous matte foundation

Let’s see how the luminous matte foundation performs overall and if it’s worth spending your hard earned cash on it.

The #FauxFilter Luminous Matte foundation packaging

This brand new Huda Beauty foundation has overall the same exact packaging as the original Faux filter liquid foundation.

Huda Beauty Faux filter liquid foundation vs
Faux Filter luminous matte foundation differences

There are only two noticeable differences when it comes to the packaging:

  • The outer packaging on the new Huda Beauty foundation does not have a faded grey colour on it’s base.
  • The base of the foundation has a sticker with either faux filter liquid foundation or luminous matte foundation on it.

Huda Beauty Faux filter liquid foundation vs
Faux Filter luminous matte foundation differences

The exterior of the foundation container is exactly the same.

In terms of packaging in my opinion it was a bit of a let down because you can barely distinguish the two unless you go read the foundation name on the container.

Huda is known for her high quality packaging and it would have been epic to have it in a different foundation container.

The Faux filter Luminous matte shade range

The shade range includes 9 new shades , taking it a to a grand total of 39 different shades.

  • fair

  • Beige B

The Huda Beauty virtual assistant service will be able to colour match your foundation accordingly.

I truly advise you to do a colour match consultation as word on the Youtube sphere is that the shades don’t correspond to the original shades of the faux filter liquid foundation.

Through research I found that lighter skin tones mentioned the shades were not light enough and appeared darker than what they previously used to be in the same shades. The shade name that corresponds to your usual shade will most likely NOT be the same.

Also, the undertones appear to be different compared to the same exact shades.

For darker skin tones however there has been a true improvement in shade range and tonality which has been praised.

The colour match is definitely different to the previous Huda foundations so be wary! Either test in store or book an appointment with their virtual assistant to get the right colour match.

One great thing is that they have improved their shade range for darker skin tones.

The Huda Beauty Faux filter Luminous Matte formula

Huda Beauty has expressed her passion to create an upgrade to the Faux filter liquid foundation taking into consideration what we wanted to improve to make it the perfect foundation.

Huda Beauty Faux Filter Luminous Matte foundation review Toasted coconut

The real question is did they manage to deliver true results which are an improvement?

Fragrance

They have totally eliminated the characteristic Huda Beauty Faux filter liquid foundation scent as it wasn’t popular at all worldwide.

It has no scent at all and to be honest I may well be the only person on this planet who loves that scent ,it is reminds me of Dubai holidays.

If you are sensitive to smell then you can count on this being fragrance-free.

Coverage

The consistency of the faux filter luminous matte foundation is very thick compared to it’s predecessor so I expected it to be very thick and full coverage.

However you will find that although it is meant be a full coverage foundation, it is more of a medium to full coverage instead.

I personally prefer that it is buildable than full blown bam full coverage, as it gives me room to build it up as I prefer on the particular day.

It does cover acne, redness and pigmentation, however the more you build it up the more cakey it gets.

Blending ability

In terms of blending ability ,the new Huda Beauty foundation dries down quickly.

It’s best you work one section at a time or quickly as it sets and you may well not be able to blend it out.

Make-up finish

My make-up finish was not matte luminous even though I totally love the name. It is more of a satin make-up finish but bear in mind that if you use a dewy primer or the Huda Beauty Glow Coco hydrating Mist you will get a luminous finish.

Lasting power

The new Huda Beauty foundation doesn’t have great lasting power unfortunately in the sense that the foundation after 6 hours definitely doesn’t look fresh at all.

Bear in mind that you will not look as perfect as you did initially as the hours pass by.

For an event or occasion it does hold up beautifully but if you need it for the whole day you will definitely need to adjust and add some during the day.

Transfer proof

Although it claims to be transfer proof unfortunately it wasn’t and to be honest I was hoping it was but it’s more transfer proof than it’s predecessor for sure.

Unfortunately with mask use, it is impossible for it to not rub off onto the mask no matter which foundation you use as the mask rubs onto the skin.

I would just bring some touch up with me if I were to need it.

Mask proof

Unfortunately, the Luminous matte foundation is not mask proof. It did end up rubbing off especially on my nose.

Waterproof

The foundation is better than the original Faux filter liquid foundation in terms of waterproofing, the other one cannot even withstand rain or tears without me ending up with streaks on my face.

Does the Huda Beauty Luminous Matte foundation oxidise?

The Huda Beauty Luminous matte foundation does oxidise as the hours go by, so it’s imperative that you get the right shade with their virtual assistant.

Does the Luminous matte foundation settle into lines or pores?

This new Huda Beauty foundation holds very well for the first few hours with no visible creasing or settling.

At around the 5-6 hours mark unfortunately it does have a tendency to settle into creases and fine lines.

Does the Huda Beauty faux filter Luminous Matte foundation break up?

Unfortunately, if you have any expression lines or fine lines after around 6 hours the foundation will slightly break up in those areas.

The edges of your foundation may also break up, as the formula of the foundation is quick to set and hard to blend out.

Flash back

I didn’t notice any flash back issues with this foundation.

Comedogenic

Finally a Huda Beauty foundation that is not comedogenic. This did not appear to trigger my pores getting blocked and acne.

The Huda Beauty Faux filter Luminous Matte foundation effects on different skin types

It is important to know how the foundation reacts on different types of skin because what may work for you, may not work for others.

I have combination skin type, where I get excessive oils on my t-zone and very dry patches elsewhere with the regular breakout zones, major redness and sensitivity.

So testing foundations for me is a total treat, I get to see how the foundation reacts to the oils, dry patches, redness, scars, spots, expression lines and sensitivity.

The Luminous Matte foundation on dry skin

The Huda Beauty Faux Filter Luminous matte foundation has the tendency to cling to dry patches.

The only way to get round this is by using a cleanser and try to basically decrease the dry skin as much as possible.

The problem with it clinging to the dry skin is that it may well peel off so it’s best to make sure you use a moisturiser and effective primer as well as have a good cleansing routine.

I use the Foreo Luna Mini 3 for this purpose and it helps.

The Luminous Matte foundation on oily skin

With oily skin types surprisingly enough, it handled keeping the oils at bay really well.

I was really impressed with how it didn’t allow the oils to come through so much so that you end up looking like a mess.

However, if you don’t use a pore filler unfortunately it will highlight your pores.

Also, with oily skin only use one layer of the foundation and don’t build it up to full coverage because it won’t help your oil situation. Whereas if you use one layer of it, it actually performs quite well.

The Luminous Matte foundation on combination skin

With combination skin what happens is that you will have a combination of issues to avoid, one being the dry patches and the second being those huge oil producing pores.

The only way to get round this is to have a good cleansing routine, use a moisturing primer especially for the dry areas and use a pore filler on those darn pores.

I don’t advise building up the foundation to full coverage because you will end up looking cakey.

The Luminous Matte foundation on acne prone skin

The Huda Beauty luminous matte foundation is good at covering acne and its redness unless you have dry patches.

Also finally this foundation is actually non-comedogenic. It didn’t make me break out at all, whereas the Huda Beauty Faux Filter liquid foundation was the horror to my skin in terms of breakouts.

No matter if I cleansed thoroughly it still made me majorly breakout, whereas the new one luckily doesn’t cause breakouts.

The Luminous Matte foundation on mature skin

I don’t recommend this foundation for mature skin only because after a few hours it tends to settle into creases, into fine lines and the longer you leave it on it will break apart in those areas.

What even worse for mature skin is building up to full coverage this foundation as it will even more exentuate the areas you want to filter out.

If you had to use this foundation maybe just use it for a few hours maximum to avoid it misbehaving.

Should you apply the Huda Beauty luminous matte foundation with a beauty blender or a foundation brush?

Generally, the skin finish when applying foundations is dependant on the tool you use to lay it down.

So let’s compare who does better with this foundation.

Beauty blender application

The beauty blender and the Huda Beauty Luminous matte foundation work well together especially because the foundation dries down quick so you have to work quickly.

Beauty blenders tend to offer less coverage but be great on areas with pore or fine line issues.

Foundation brush application

The foundation brush and the Huda Beauty Luminous matte foundation also work well together.

The brush has the innate ability of being able to offer slightly more coverage, but because the foundation sets so quick I preferred using the beauty blender to avoid the brush streaks.

Which primer is suitable for this foundation?

Depending on your skin type you may want to consider using a primer:

  • A pore filler is appropriate for skin which has visible pores and pore related issues.
  • A nourishing moisturising primer is beneficial especially for dry skin ,to avoid the foundation sticking to the dry patches.

If you have pore issues I can’t stress enough how crucial it is to use a pore filler as this foundation doesn’t do well with enlarged pores. It actually highlights them unfortunately without the use of a pore filler.

How to use the Faux filter Luminous Matte foundation

For Medium coverage

To achieve medium coverage with the Huda Beauty Luminous matte foundation only lay on one layer of the foundation with either a beauty blender or foundation brush.

For Full coverage

To achieve full coverage with the Huda Beauty Luminous matte foundation, two coats are to be blended onto the skin with either the beauty blender or foundation brush.

Bear in mind, that you definitely won’t be needing more than two layers, as it offers way too much coverage overall.

Setting the Luminous Matte foundation vs not setting it

Setting the foundation with the Huda Beauty Easy bake powder works well as a finishing touch but I don’t recommend leaving it on to bake as it will cause texture and caking.

In terms of setting sprays, if you want a glowing finish go for a dewy one and if you want a matte finish go for a normal setting spray as the finish verges on satin/matte.

Does the Huda Beauty Luminous Matte foundation cover scars, moles and redness?

One layer of foundation will definitely give you medium coverage whereby redness and pigmentation is well hidden. However, moles and scars will be slightly visible.

If you build up the foundation to full coverage you will definitely cover up everything you want to cover up but it will unfortunately tend to look cakey.

My experience with the Huda Beauty Faux filter Luminous Matte foundation

How you will use the Huda Beauty Faux Filter Luminous matte foundation will greatly determine the success to your skin finish.

I have tested this foundation in multiple ways for more than a month. Only because when it comes to Huda products I get too excited and I don’t want to miss telling you all the good and bad about the product.

My skin type

I have combination skin which offers dry skin patches, oily skin zones, redness, sensitivity and some breakouts. I also have a scar on my cheek.

Huda beauty Faux filter luminous matte foundation before

I tested this new Huda Beauty foundation in various ways:

Using no primer

This method didn’t work for me, the foundation ended up binding to the dry skin and settled into my oil producing pores. My pores had never looked so big before.

Using the Huda Beauty Water Jelly Hydrating Primer with the Faux Filter Luminous matte foundation

Once I learnt that the foundation binded to dry skin I decided to test it together with the Water Jelly Hydrating Primer.

Huda Beauty Water Jelly Hydrating Primer with the Faux Filter Luminous matte foundation

As much as it helped with the dry areas, the pores were atrocious and were not filtered at all. I almost feel the foundation highlights the pores unfortunately.

Using the Benefit The POREfessional Face Primer

This worked wonders for the pores and it blurred the pores out. Finally, a successful method to minimise the pores shinning through.

However, this will only give you a beautiful base if you don’t build up the foundation.

How much luminous matte foundation you use is the key to it’s success

The Luminous Matte foundation is medium to full coverage, my advice is just go in with a medium coverage.

You will find that if you build it up, your skin will look cakey, textured and even older.

I felt it that it looked really good as medium coverage and anything more made me look like a wax doll.

Using a concealer

I used the Huda Beauty Overachiever concealer and the trick with this foundation is avoing the eye area so that you don’t layer the concealer on top of the foundation. This will create cakeing if not.

Setting the Luminous Matte foundation with the easy bake setting powder

The foundation finish in essence is satin and not luminous to be honest so don’t go in and bake on the setting powder as it will cake and create texture.

What you want to do is to go in and blend a slight amount for a flawless finish.

The finish without a luminous setting spray

If you don’t use a luminous setting spray you will look more matte/satin.

The finish with the Huda Beauty Glow Coco Hydrating Mist

The Glow Coco Hydrating Mist gives you that luminous finish on a medium coverage which makes it look so beautiful and natural. I highly recommend using it only when you go for medium coverage.

Do not dare use it on full coverage as oh lord you will look like a wax figure and it will all end up feeling so heavy on the skin.

Before and After Huda Beauty Faux filter Luminous Matte foundation

The Huda Beauty Faux Filter Luminous matte foundation is definitely a medium coverage foundation.

It sets so fast, so you are best working the foundation on the skin in sections, you have to work fast because once it sets it can’t be blended out.

It covers very well my redness, obviously moles and scars you sort of can still see with a medium coverage.

You can choose to build it up but I feel that when this foundation is built up it looks very textured and feels/looks like way too much cakey make-up.

Huda beauty Faux filter luminous matte foundation before and after

Overall, I like the feel and the look of the Huda Beauty Faux Filter Luminous matte foundation if I make sure I cleanse, moisturise and use a pore filler.

After a few hours however the foundation starts settling in my expression creases ,pores and also breaks up.

These are the close ups of the issues.

After 6 hours Huda Beauty Faux Filter Luminous matte foundation

However from a distance and not close up it still appears ok, not flawless but acceptable. The issue is really close up.

Foundation formula

In terms of the formula, the Huda Beauty Faux Filter liquid foundation has a creamy thick consistency whereas the new Huda Beauty foundation has a thick quick drying formula.

Foundation finish

The Huda Beauty Faux Filter foundation offers a matte finish which doesn’t set, whereas the Luminous matte foundation offers a satin/matte finish which sets.

Transfer proof ability

The Huda Beauty Faux Filter Luminous matte foundation is slightly transfer proof but the original foundation transfers like there is no tomorrow.

Waterproof ability

The Faux Filter liquid foundation is not at all waterproof, you end up with streaks and dots, if it rains or you end up crying.

However the Luminous matte foundation does well with both humidity and water as long as you don’t get a paper or towel to dab it after it’s wet.

The original foundation has a beautiful strong scent to it whereas the Luminous matte has no scent at all.

Coverage

The Huda Beauty Faux Filter foundation stick offers a light to medium coverage whereas the Luminous matte foundation offers medium to full coverage.

The two formulas are very different, the Huda Beauty foundation stick is a light and creamy easy to blend to formula, whereas the Luminous matte foundation is a thick fast setting formula.

Foundation finish

The skin finish to these foundations is very different. The Huda Beauty Faux Filter foundation stick offers a soft natural glowing finish whereas the Luminous matte foundation offers a satin/matte skin finish.

Transfer proof ability

Eventhough Huda Beauty claims these are both transfer proof, unfortunately they do transfer but at least not as much as the original Huda Beauty Faux Filter liquid foundation.

Waterproof ability

Both the foundations are partially waterproof, you won’t get streaks in your make-up but if you get wet and then dab the make-up it will definitely rub off to some extent.

The foundation scent

Both these foundations don’t have any scent whatsoever.

Which Huda Beauty foundation is best?

The best Huda Beauty foundation for you greatly depends on your foundation preference and skin type.

Best Huda Beauty foundation, Huda Beauty Faux Filter liquid foundation, Huda Beauty Faux Filter skin finish foundation stick, Huda Beauty Faux Filter Luminous matte foundation review

The Huda Beauty Faux Filter Liquid foundation is the best for those who:

  • Want insane full coverage
  • Use it more photographic purposes, like photoshoots as it photographs beautifully.
  • Want a fully matte finish

However it’s not the best for:

  • Transfer
  • Creasing
  • Dry skin
  • Summer
  • Waterproof ability

I generally use this foundation for photographs as in person it can make me look like a wax doll. It’s also not suitable for summer or being in the rain as its not waterproof and has mad transfer.

It also has a tendency to oxidise, break up and settle into creases, as well as making me breakout.

Somehow it photographs beautifully and I reach for it when I want to take a beautiful shot.

The Huda Beauty Faux Filter Luminous Matte foundation is the best for those who:

  • Want medium to full coverage
  • Don’t like scented foundations
  • Want a matte/satin finish
  • Want a Huda foundation which is more transfer proof.

However it’s not the best for:

  • Enlarged pores
  • Dry skin patches
  • Long events as it doesn’t look as nice and fresh after 5-6 hours and settles into creases as well as slightly breaking up.

The Huda Beauty Faux Filter foundation stick foundation is the best for those who:

  • Want light to medium coverage
  • Want a glowing natural skin finish
  • Don’t want a scented foundation
  • Want an easy to blend foundation

However, it’s not the best if:

  • You want more coverage, this is more of a natural skin finish.

Is the Huda Beauty Luminous Matte foundation vegan?

The Huda Beauty Luminous matte foundation is Vegan.

Which is my favourite Huda Beauty foundation?

Well, to be honest I like all the foundations but for different occasions.

  • I love the Huda Beauty Faux Filter liquid foundation for photoshoots and social media content.
  • I love the Huda Beauty Faux Filter skin finish foundation stick for days where I want a light glowing skin finish.
  • I love the new Huda Beauty Faux Filter Luminous matte foundation for special occasions where I wear it for no more than 5 hours as it looks amazing as medium coverage and NOT built up.

The Final Verdict

The online influencer community unfortunately is bias let’s face it, mainly because they don’t want to get dropped by pr lists.

A lot of the reviews online didn’t disclose the must know facts before buying this foundation and how it compares to its predecessors.

Did they actually create a new and improved foundation? As much as I really love Huda, unfortunately I feel this new foundation is tweeked but not necessarily new and improved.

Could it be that the release was rushed? I only think that because the foundation came in the same exact foundation pump and packaging design as the original Faux filter liquid foundation.

To me the packaging was a major disappointment! It makes it hard to distinguish between the two.

In terms of formula, the two foundations are totally different.

The improvements for some were the fact that it was scent free.

The Huda Beauty Faux Filter Luminous Matte foundation is partially transfer proof and waterproof. I say partially because there is transfer and its not fully waterproof but at least its better in those two areas compared to the original Huda Beauty foundation which used to transfer everywhere, not set and was not at all waterproof.

Does one foundation look better than the other? Well, at least the new Huda Beauty Luminous matte foundation feels lighter on the skin whereas the original feels so heavy.

It’s not a luminous matte finish but more of satin matte finish. Which I actually like, worse comes to worse I can use a setting spray with a glow to give it a more of luminous finish.

Huda Beauty faux filter luminous matte foundation before and after

The Luminous Matte foundation looks very nice for the first few hours if you know how to work with it.

Unfortunately after that unfortunately it breaks up and creases so I don’t recommend it for more than 5 hours wear as it won’t look that good and fresh.

This was the major lowdown with the new Huda Beauty foundation.

I love wearing this foundation for just a few hours, I got so many lovely compliments for my flawless base.

Don’t forget that it’s one of those foundations you have to know how to work with to make it work.
