Live True London hair colouring techniques
Live True London offers roots tints, highlightings, tints, ombre colouring, artistic hair colours, balayage hair colour and foliage balayage hair colour.
But which technique is best for your hair? Let’s see the difference between ombre hair, hair balayage and Foilage balayage.
What is ombre hair?
Generally with ombre hair the colour comes in a graduated tone, almost like a two tone hair colour. It tends to have natural or darker roots which then blend into a lighter shade.
This type of ombre effect is more of a hair colour style.
What is hair balayage?
Hair balayage is a hair colour technique which allows the hair colourist to colour your hair by a freehand technique.
This type of technique ensures a more natural hair colour free from harsh regrowth lines. It also is customisable to someone’s facial features which can suit them better.
Is balayage damaging to the hair?
Balayage is less damaging than using foils during the hair colour procedure. However, as per every hair colour application there is some degree of hair damage.
Ombre vs Balayage
With ombre the colour is placed horizontally whereas with balayage is a vertical application.
Ombre is a shading style colour on the hair, whereas balayage is a hair colour application technique.
What is foliage?
Foilyage is a hair technique which works on the same basis of balayage. The hair again is hand painted but foils and heat will be applied to lift the hair to lighter shades.
This is more suitable for brunettes that want to go blonde or blonds who want to turn blonder.
Balayage vs Foliage balayage
Balayage is a bespoke hair colouring technique which gives full creative control to the hair colour stylist that doesn’t use foils, on the other hand foliage offers the same bespoke colour placement with the help of heat and foils to lift the hair to lighter tones than permitted with Balayage.
The patch allergy test
They are very strict when it comes down to allergy testing, you will have to allergy test depending on what hair colour processes you go through.
In my case I had to have two different hair colour allergy tests as I was having both roots and foliage balayage done.
Don’t worry, they will send you an allergy test reminder 48h prior to your appointment if it’s your first visit.
They pop a drop of the product at the back of your ear and then you have to return after 48h as they will apply the second product for patch testing.
After another 48h you will return to the salon and you will have completed your patch allergy test.
They will give you a little card each time so make sure you hold onto that if it’s your first time with them.
If you loose the allergy testing cards don’t worry they will have inputted your data on the system and it will be recorded.
The booking process
The booking process is very easy. You can either book online, in the salon or over the phone.
The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly so they will be able to best guide you to know what’s best for your hair.
The also have virtual consultations which you can book online.
The Live True London Brixton salon experience
The salon is very pretty and has this typical Brixton brick finish feel to it.
Obviously with the Covid situation, it’s a bit different to the good old days where you sat happily and carefree.
They have perplex barriers between each hairdresser chair.
As soon as you arrive the hairdressers are so lovely and welcoming, they make you feel relaxed and ready to enjoy your pampering session.
This is very important for me, that the vibe is positive as I want to have a relaxing experience whilst I’m there.
The hair consultation
The hairdresser will assess your hair and will help you achieve the look you are going for.
Bear in mind that going blond can take a few sessions especially if your hair has been previously died dark.
My Live True London Brixton hair salon experience
As I arrived I was offered sanitizing gel and waited to be brought to my creative stylist and colourist Renata.
She assessed my hair colour and asked what I wanted. We looked at the realistic colour shade possibility that my current very dark brown could achieve.
It was time to say goodbye to my dark locks and embrace some hair radiance just in time for the sunshine.
She carried out a foliage balaye where the artistic strokes together with the power of heat and foils, would unleash a delicate lightened balayage.
The colour was mixed in with the Olaplex treatment which was very exciting as every step was explained to me.
After this my hair was washed and a toner was applied just to give it the perfect hair colour shade.
After that Renata also applied the Olaplex number 2 treatment with a hair relaxing massage.
We were going all out with all the tlc my hair would need after colouration.
Last but not least she cut and blow dried my hair and voilà here is my transformation.

The real question is, is the Live True London Brixton’s foilage balayage worth the spend?
The hair results above speak for themselves, my hair looked naturally radiant and so healthy even after all that colour application.
